It has happened to me SO MANY TIMES. I’ll buy lettuce to put on my sandwiches, or fruit to add to my kids’ plates, but the only place it ends up is in the garbage. There is one simple thing that has turned this around for us..
To get started, gather some Ziploc bags, either snack size or sandwhich bags. You are going to assemble a bag of mixed fruits and vegetables for every day of the week (or whatever best suits your family). Wash all of your fruits and vegetables and place them on paper towels to dry. Cut up your fruits and veggies and place a variety of each, starting with the heaviest items on the bottom, in the bags.
In these bags I put in the following items: carrots, cherry tomatoes, grapes, peppers (red, green and yellow), and blueberries. These are sandwich sized bags, but next time I think I will go for snack size because I was only able to finish half a bag for lunch anyhow. Plus snack size would be much better for the kids too =).
As for lettuce for sandwiches, once it is washed, I leave it in whole strips and put it in a large ziploc bag. Pre-cutting isn’t necessary and it will slow down on the browning process.
That is it! It takes me about 15-30 minutes depending on how much produce I have purchased. I’m sure you will find like I have, if it is pre-washed and packaged, you will grab for it more and there will be less waste. Enjoy! =)
