If you are looking for a simple play dough recipe, look no further! I tried out the Internets most popular 2 ingredient play dough recipes and believe I have found the best one. It was surprising to me which ones worked 👍 and which ones didn’t 👎. The BEST easy play dough recipe was a combination I hadn’t tried before but it turned out so soft AND it’s edible! You can watch the video below or continue scrolling onward to read the post instead :).
Shaving Cream & Cornstarch
The first combination I tried was 1/4 cup shaving foam and 1/2 cup cornstarch.
In the authors post she used a female shaving gel, I believe it was the Skintimate brand. Her’s seemed to turn out, mine however did not. I’m not sure if it’s because I used shaving foam instead of the gel or if a certain brand works better then others but this one for me was a total fail, it did not come together despite me adding more shaving foam. When I added water I was able to briefly mold it into a ball but as soon as I pressed it on it, it crumbled.
Icing & Icing Sugar
I was excited to try this one because it is edible! So handy if you have little ones that want to play with play dough but are still at that mouthing stage.
I mixed 1/4 cup of icing with 1/2 cup of icing sugar to begin with and then continued to sprinkle in more icing sugar as I kneaded it. The end result was super soft and mold-able.
Paint & Cornstarch
This one intrigued me because it was a combination that I’ve never heard of before.
This recipe calls for 1/4 cup of paint mixed with 1/2 cup of cornstarch. It was very dry and wasn’t pulling together so I added some water. The author of this recipe did call it “mold-able clay” so I’m not sure if they intended it for to be used as play dough but it definitely would not work as such, it was very dense.
Conditioner & Cornstarch
This is a combination I have tried in the past and liked. You mix 1/2 cup of conditioner with 1/4 cup of cornstarch.
It turned out OK, not as good as I remember. I think when I’ve made it in the past it was a more liquidy conditioner where as the one I used here was thicker. It would be interesting to see how different brands of conditioner effect the outcome.
Yogurt & Cornstarch
Yay, another edible recipe! This one calls for 1/4 cup of yogurt and 1/2 cup of cornstarch.
The author of this recipe used regular yogurt while I used Greek yogurt because it was what I had on hand. The Greek yogurt was too thick for this mixture to pull together properly so the end result was very dry and crumbly. I added water to try and compensate but unfortunately it did not work out, it turned out very dense. I would like to try this recipe again but using regular yogurt next time.
Lotion & Cornstarch
The last and final recipe I tried was a 1/4 cup of lotion mixed with 1/2 cup of cornstarch.
This one smelled lovely and honestly looked promising in the beginning. The problem came when it is left in the air for a little while (as were all of the recipes I tried), it became very dry.
The BEST Simple Play dough Recipe?..
Hands down it was the icing mixed with the icing sugar. It was soft, it was mold able, and it is also edible! A huge thumbs up from me :).
