A super inexpensive way to make adorable jewelry. These beads are made out of salt dough.
To make these you will need:
- ½ cup flour
- ½ cup salt
- ¼ cup hot water
- A straw
- Optional: If you want to paint them you will need acrylic paint or for colored beads you can add a few drops of food coloring. You may also decide to put a glaze over them such as mod-podge.
To start, mix the hot water and salt together then add the flour and mix with your hands. The result should be a ball of soft dough.
Roll the dough into the bead size of your choice. Use a straw and make a hole by twisting the straw into the dough – do not push, it will ruin the shape.
If you find that the beads are crumbling, keep a jar of warm water close by. Add a little water to your hand before rolling it.
When you are almost through making your beads, heat your oven up to 250 degrees. Line a baking sheet with wax paper and separate the beads.
Baking time will vary depending on the size. Mine took about 20 minutes. You do not want them to brown, you just want them to be hardened.
My beads came out textured because I used coarse salt. I do recommend you use table salt instead – my dough was very crumbly and hard to work with.
After they had cooled I hand painted pink hearts on them and make a necklace. The ideas are endless really, you could make bracelets, key-chains, earrings and etc. If you decide to make these, I would love to see! Please do send me your photos =).
