Do you remember the oil and water trick as a kid? I’m bringing it back today in a fun way. For this fun activity you will need the following items:
A bottle (see my post here for Best Bottles for Sensory Play), Baby Oil, an assortment of glitter, water, and purple food coloring.
Start by filling your bottle half way with tap water. Next add 3 drops of purple food coloring. Twist the cap on and give it a good shake.
Now time to add glitter! We added Elmer’s silver glitter, gold stars, and the larger silver pieces shown below.
Fill the rest of your bottle with baby oil. I found this one at the Dollar Tree for $1.25.
Shake it all together and have fun watching the water and oil separate.
It’s neat to see the change in the way the water and oil separate depending on if it is shaken together or moved slowly. The above photos are when it has been shaken together, but when you move it slowly it has more of a lava lamp look.
Here it is all settled. In about a week the baby oil and food coloring will completely separate and the baby oil will become crystal clear as shown below.
